FIGHTERS 'BEATEN BY UFO' >>> added 29/7/2002

Two F-16 fighter jets armed with air-to-air missiles were scrambled to race across Washington in pursuit of a mysterious blue object travelling at 'phenomenal speed'. The jets lost it somewhere over Waldorf, Maryland, about 30 miles from the capital.

Military spokesmen said radar had detected an unknown object and two fighters from Andrews air force base were sent up to investigate. They refused to speculate and would not describe it as a UFO. Renny Rogers, who lives in Waldorf, said: 'I saw this light blue object. There was one jet right behind it., chasing it, but the object was just leaving him in the dust.'

Astronomers have revealed that on 14 June, an asteroid the size of a football pitch made one of the closest ever recorded approaches to the Earth. It is only the sixth time an asteroid has been seen to penetrate the Moon's orbit, and this is by far the biggest rock to do so.

What has worried some astronomers, though, is that the space object was only detected on 17 June, several days after its flyby. It was found by astronomers working on the Lincoln Laboratory Near Earth Asteroid Research (Linear) search programme in New Mexico.

Persistent theft of components from one of Britain's largest academic super- computers is taking a sinister turn. A scientist is warning that thieves might be selling the computer's brainpower to Iraq or al-Qaida for clandestine weapons research.

"These computers are perfect for weapons research," says Carlos Frenk, director of Durham University's Institute for Computational Cosmology (ICC). "There's clearly something going on here that should be of great concern to political authorities."

The computer in question is the ICC's £1.5 million Cosmology Machine, which began work in July 2001. It was designed to simulate how the Universe evolved as galaxies formed and clustered together, and could perform a mammoth 456 billion calculations every second.
